You will need a browser that supports 128-bit encryption in order to register for a certificate. To determine whether or not you already have the appropriate browser, either contact your IS department or follow the steps below. Before upgrading your browser, check with your system administrator and make sure you are connected to the Internet.

How can I tell if I have a 128-bit browser?

  For Internet Explorer Users:
Select "About Internet Explorer" from the Internet Explorer "Help" menu.
If your version number is 4.x or lower, you must upgrade to version 5.01 or greater. Version 6.0 is recommended.
The information screen should show "Cipher Strength: 128-bit". If not, you must upgrade your browser to a version that supports 128-bit encryption.

Internet Explorer users can upgrade to version 6.0 at: www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/default.asp

Note: Internet Explorer 6.0 includes 128-bit encryption support. If you download and install 6.0, you will not need to download any further updates to get 128-bit support.

For Netscape Communicator or Navigator Users:
  Go to the "Help" menu
  Select "About Communicator" or "Navigator"
Look for the Section that reads "Contains encryption software from RSA Data Security Inc" (along the left hand column)
If it says: "This version supports US security", you have a 128-bit browser.
If it says: "This version supports International security, you have a 40-bit browser. If this is the case, you must download a new version that supports 128-bit encryption.

Note: We require you download Version 4.7x of Netscape Communicator from the Netscape download site.

Is your browser configured correctly?

Before requesting and retrieving a digital certificate, you will need to have certain browser options set. Netscape and Internet Explorer users will need to allow server-side cookies, and Internet Explorer users will need to enable ActiveX. Find out how to do so by clicking on the type of browser you have below.
